Young, queer and neurodivergent: All the makings for excellence

Noa is an inner-city Melburnian, three-months into their career at Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA), adjusting to the corporate world after being employed in the queer arts scene.

“I used to work at a queer bar which I absolutely loved. Working in a space with a community that allows you to be your whole self, and to show up without question, can be a huge comfort. Particularly knowing the people you surround yourself with will accept you for whoever you want to be,” said Noa.

After ceasing employment due to a team restructure, Noa was nervous for what was to come. Finding an employer that understands transness and neurodiversity was important to them, with many workplaces not walking the walk when it comes to support.

“I was used to being completely open about my identity, and one of the many reasons I hesitated to enter the corporate sphere was because I would rather compromise on financial security than my identity,” said Noa.

“But the first day I started at RIAA, the co-CEO, Estelle Parker, posted an article on neurodivergence in the workplace which outlined why opening the dialogue helped to remove the stigma around accommodating those with neurodiversity. I knew then and there this was the right job for me.”

Finding this safe space for Noa to work in was WISE Employment’s Rainbow WISE program, a dedicated employment service for members of the LGBTQIA+ community with disability.

“I was definitely skeptical, but also very curious. I made an appointment with Mel, a Rainbow WISE Consultant and felt an immediate bond,” said Noa.

As it turns out, Mel themselves planted those flyers on Smith Street.

“A fear we often get from Rainbow WISE customers is that having been burned so badly in the past – whether from past employers or life experience – is the feeling that they can’t be themselves,” said Mel.

“To that, I say the interview process is as much about interviewing them as it is about them interviewing you. If you don’t mesh with them, and hesitate to show your identity, then it isn’t the right role for you. Nobody should ever have to compromise on who they are at their core.”

Noa says understanding your own gender identity and neurodiversity is a journey, one that ebbs and flows, but it flourishes easily in an environment with people who understand, which is why it’s important for community to support community.

“The term neurodiversity is new to me, and I’m still finding ways to balance my buzz with my calmness. Mel and my Post Placement Consultant Zach helped me to understand that my queerness and neurodiversity are a core part of my being and not something to shy away from,” said Noa.

And these conversations make me feel confident to have them with others. Asking for accommodations began to feel less daunting because the conversations had already begun with Mel and Zac.”

From finding work clothing that made Noa feel empowered, to lending an ear when they had concerns, Mel and Zac will continuously find ways to support Noa in being open, comfortable and a proud queer person.

“All the work we’ve put in and the hours of talking have led me to where I am today. I have a beautiful partner, my relationship is growing because I’m financially stable and I can just feel that I’m at the precipice of a really great life,” said Noa.
