WISE UP: Second chances for a brighter future

Group of workersWe are excited to announce an innovative new service called WISE UP, (Unleash Potential). The program is tailored to cater to individuals with a criminal record within our Workforce Australia caseload across Victoria. Developed in collaboration with specialist partners, The Green Collar, its purpose is to source employment opportunities and engage specialist counsellors and allied health experts to provide additional support to these customers.

The impact has been immediate and transformative, proving to save lives and create a peer support group unlike anything seen in Australia.

Facilitating this program is a team of recruitment specialists and individuals who have faced struggles with addiction or time in jail. Their firsthand experience gives them a unique understanding of the stigmas and barriers that individuals with a criminal record may encounter.

WISE UP participant Craig says, “I found it to be a really positive environment, no judgement and real support from everyone”

“The WISE UP program itself is run by a bunch of legends whose stories I relate too. Their support, encouragement and good energy is a must for anyone going through a tough patch in life. Their experiences and story gives hope to me and I’m sure to anyone that is willing to hear them out” says another WISE UP participant, Antoine.

volunteers of the WISE UP programAt WISE, we are strong advocates for providing post-custodial and pre-release support to help individuals transition back into society, providing them with the necessary support to thrive.

In addition to the emotional and psychological support fostered by the service, those taking part receive a practical toolkit to help them get back on their feet. This often includes immediate support such as financial assistance for accommodation, food and clothing, access to mobile phones, public transport, and Uber rides for volunteering. The program was also designed to include the technology required for self-service job hunting, resume preparation, and interview skills assistance. The service is also backed by genuine employers willing to hire ex-offenders.

Each person is assigned a Program Coach for the duration of the service, with access to a 24-hour helpline for personal or critical needs, free counselling, and introductory rehab services. The program is officially recognised by the Victorian Courts and the justice system as a valuable resource.

WISE UP participant Troy says, “everyone who ran the program was so willing to help me in any way shape or form. I haven’t met people like that before. They were super cool.”

Reference and court letters to use in the instance of bail or proof of positive change can be organised and have resulted in child access, suspended sentences and are received in high regard. These are just a few of the many benefits and components of this unique and personalised WISE UP service.

WISE UP participant Jesse says, “Since I finished I’ve gotten my white card, forklift license and today I got my first job in a long, long, time and I start tomorrow. Pretty much since I did the program I really put in a lot more effort to focus on doing things and sticking things out. The program really helped me get motivated and focused and helped with my self-confidence and worth and I just wanted to say thanks.”

“Definitely have gained some important knowledge and feel better about myself personally and more confident to reach my goals”

Volunteering through The Green Collar Brigade is a fundamental element of the WISE UP service. It allows participants to add recent experience to their resumes also bringing meaning and purpose increasing self-esteem and wellbeing all whilst having a strong impact on your community.

We are eager to see WISE UP continue to help build the confidence in these customers, to ultimately reach their vocational goals.
