What are your employment options as a school leaver?

Thinking about your next move after leaving school? At WISE, we understand that stepping into this new chapter can bring a mix of excitement and uncertainty. Exploring the job market might seem a bit overwhelming, but it’s also full of opportunities to kickstart your career. If you’re wondering where to begin, read along to find some options and ideas to help you get started.

Employment pathways for school leavers

There are countless pathways for you to explore as a school leaver. Whether you’re aiming for full-time or part-time work, a casual role, or an apprenticeship, there’s something out there for everyone. It’s a good idea to focus on industries that match your interests or that can help you gain transferrable skills you can use in the future.

Where to start

Begin by figuring out what kind of work interests you. Think about your strengths, interests, hobbies, and skills you’ve gained from school or extracurricular activities. Entry-level positions or casual roles can be a great way to build confidence and experience as you work out your long-term goals. You might also like to consider support services like School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) or gaining hands-on experience through an internship.

Choosing a career that’s right for you

Not sure which career path to follow? Take your time discovering your interests and researching industries that appeal to you. You may like to take an online career quiz or explore volunteer work in different fields to help you figure out what feels like the best fit.   Consider reaching out to mentors, teachers, parents, or an employment consultant for advice and to better understand your options. Employment consultants, like the team at WISE, are here to provide personalised guidance to help you find the right path. Register your interest to check your eligibility and get started.

Creating a standout resume as a school leaver

It’s okay if you don’t have work experience yet—your resume can still stand out! Focus on highlighting your education, any volunteer work, extracurricular activities, and skills like teamwork, time management, communication, and problem-solving. Be sure to keep it clear, simple, and tailored to the job you’re applying for. For tips on creating a standout resume, check out Resume Tips: How to Stand Out.
