Using your NDIS plan to build skills, your way

Many people aren’t always sure how their NDIS plan can support skill-building, but it’s one of the most helpful parts of your plan. You can use it to improve your day-to-day, work and community skills that support your independence and future goals. Skill-building can boost confidence, simplify routines and give you the tools to take the next step.

Read on to learn how skill-building can fit into your plan.

How skill-building fits into your NDIS plan

Your NDIS plan is built around your personal goals. If your goals include living more independently, finding a job you enjoy, or feeling more connected to your community, skill-building supports may be included.

These NDIS supports can sit under Capacity Building Supports, Core Supports, or be delivered through allied health services like occupational therapy.

Because everyone’s goals and plans are different, skill-building can look different too. This is where support from a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) can be really helpful. A LAC can talk through your goals with you, explain what types of supports may fit within your plan, and help you understand what’s possible.

At NDIS at WISE, we can support you to prepare for these conversations by helping you think through your goals, identify the skills you’d like to build, and understand how different supports might help. While decisions about NDIS funding sit with the NDIS, having clear goals and the right conversations can make the process feel more manageable.

Below are some examples of what skill-building support might look like in practice.

Skills for everyday life

Everyday tasks may take some time and practice to feel comfortable. Occupational therapists (OTs) and support workers can help you build confidence in the parts of daily life that matter most to you, such as:

  • Preparing simple meals and planning your weekly groceries
  • Managing household tasks like cleaning, laundry and keeping your space organised
  • Budgeting and money skills to help you manage bills and everyday spending
  • Learning to use public transport safely and confidently
  • Setting up routines and reminders to stay organised and manage appointments

These skills may start at home, but they often support bigger goals like work, study or volunteering.

Skills for work

If employment is one of your goals, your NDIS plan can include supports that help you get job-ready at your own pace. This could look like:

  • Building daily work habits such as time management, following routines and planning tasks
  • Communication and teamwork skills, including practising customer service or role-playing common work scenarios
  • Technology skills, like using emails, apps or tools used in retail, hospitality or office jobs
  • Exploring your interests to find work that suits your strengths
  • Resume preparation, interview practice and workplace confidence

NDIS at WISE also offers programs such as Work Readiness, Volunteering Pathways, and School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES), where you can build these skills through real-world experience.

Skills for connection

Feeling confident in the community is an important part of independence and wellbeing. Through community participation supports and activities, such as volunteering, group programs or interest-based activities, you can:

  • Meet new people and join in conversations
  • Try new activities, from art groups to sports to volunteering
  • Develop hobbies and interests that help build routine
  • Navigate community places like libraries, shops or local events
  • Build emotional resilience with the help of mentoring or therapeutic support
