When Ben Perez left the Melbourne Remand Centre (MRC) in July 2023, the future was uncertain. Today, he enjoys a life filled with purpose, confidence, and connection, working at Fruit2Work—a Melbourne social enterprise dedicated to helping people get back on track after involvement with the justice system.
Ben’s journey from custody to community
Ben first met Di Micallef, a Senior Employment Partner from WISE Employment, at the MRC. Di’s genuine commitment made an immediate impression. “When I met Di, I felt really comfortable right away,” Ben says. “She’s caring and always delivers on what she promises.” The support from WISE Employment was practical and immediate. Di provided essentials such as clothing and Uber vouchers, giving Ben the confidence and resources he needed to start working again. “Coming out, you’ve got nothing,” Ben shares. “WISE gave me everything I needed to feel ready to get back to work.”
Finding purpose at Fruit2Work
At Fruit2Work, Ben quickly became more than an employee. Under General Manager Simon Fenech, who has personally experienced the challenges of transitioning back into the community, Ben is now a valued and trusted team member. “Ben’s role goes beyond deliveries—he trains new staff, opens up our warehouse, and builds relationships with customers,” Simon explains. “He’s a respected voice in the team, exactly the kind of person we’re proud to have at Fruit2Work.” Simon’s leadership style emphasises support and accountability. “Fruit2Work doesn’t judge; we focus on giving people a fair opportunity. Ben’s commitment has made a big difference.”
Overcoming obstacles with support
Ben’s transition back into community life included significant hurdles—financial pressure and ongoing legal requirements were tough initially. However, the combined support from his family, Fruit2Work, and WISE Employment made all the difference. “I promised my family I’d make positive changes,” Ben says. “Having people who genuinely care around me has helped keep me focused.” Simon emphasises the importance of collaboration with WISE Employment. “If someone needs help, we get in touch with Di and the WISE team immediately. Their support is fast and practical, and essential for success.”
Creating real opportunities
The partnership between Fruit2Work and WISE Employment continues to transform lives. Ben’s journey shows the power of providing genuine opportunities to those needing a fresh start. As Simon says, “Our job isn’t just about employment—it’s about giving people hope and real chances to move forward. Ben is a great example of what happens when people are given genuine support.”
