5 Tips for staying resilient when job hunting 

Looking for a job can bring on a mix of emotions—some days you feel optimistic, and other times it can feel like an uphill battle. At WISE, we understand that navigating your job search isn’t always easy and, at times, it can become difficult to maintain a positive mindset. That’s where practicing resilience comes into play! 

The American Psychological Association defines resilience as the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioural flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands. We’ve outlined five tips you can incorporate into your job search journey to help you stay resilient while navigating the ups and downs of job hunting. 

1. Set realistic goals and manage your expectations 

Not only can job hunting be a time-consuming process, but it can also be quite a stressful one. Trying to focus on what you can control  can help to alleviate some of this additional pressure. An example involves setting short-term goals, such as spending a day updating your resume or only sending out one or two job applications each day. This will help ensure that you only do what you can manage and feel good about without putting yourself in a position that could result in burnout. 

With the long-term goal being to secure a job, it’s important to remember to trust the process and that the small wins add up. 

2. Celebrate every win 

Celebrate every win equally! As mentioned above, although the ultimate goal is to land a job, it’s important to recognise the small victories, even if they don’t seem like much at the time. Rather than focusing on what hasn’t happened yet, focus on what has. Acknowledging your progress, whether you updated your resume or received a call for an interview—it’s a win, and every positive step counts and can help you stay in a positive frame of mind. 

3. Stay connected and have a support network 

The job-seeking process can often feel like a lonely one, but it doesn’t have to be. Staying connected with friends, family, or support networks like employment agencies can make a massive difference. Sharing your feelings with someone you trust can help lift the weight of stress, or sharing a bit of good news can lift your spirits. 

4. Focus on your mental and physical wellbeing 

Taking care of your health is just as important as the job hunt itself. It’s easy to become consumed by the search and forget to look after yourself, but staying mentally and physically healthy is crucial for resilience. 

Ensuring that you take regular breaks is important to clear your mind and stay productive. Incorporating activities that aim to reduce stress, such as practicing mindfulness, deep breathing, meditation, or simply taking time to relax, may help you achieve the right mindset and feel empowered. Maintaining healthy eating habits and getting a good night’s sleep can also keep you feeling energised and ready to take on the next opportunity. 

5. Reframe rejection and change your mindset 

Rejection is part of the job search process, and while it can be disheartening, it’s important to reframe how you think about it. Use rejection as an opportunity to adjust your mindset, viewing challenges as a learning experience and a step closer to success. There will always be something for you to learn about yourself or what the employer was looking for.
