University graduate Maria finds work through graduate disability program: GradWISE
Maria completed a Bachelor of Nursing Degree at Victoria University. Having experienced moments of depression and anxiety herself, Maria’s desire is to help people in need, and her determination to stay focused and achieve her goals, is inspired by her family.
“My father was a priest and I got my inspiration to become a nurse from him, seeing him help and care for people in their times of need really inspired me, he passed away a few years ago. Knowing that I too can make a difference to someone’s life is what motivates me daily and why I can’t wait to find work in my field,” said Maria.
Unable to secure work in her chosen field so far, Maria was introduced to GradWISE; a new initiative by WISE Employment in conjunction with Australian Universities, that empowers tertiary students with a disability or mental illness to thrive in graduate employment. It was here Maria met Chardee, GradWISE Career Coach. Chardee helped Maria secure work in a health support related field.
“Maria is a great woman and graduate. Through the GradWISE program we ensure graduates transition into work effortlessly and are seen for their skills, not their potential limitations. In working with Maria, we’ve provided her with individual coaching to strengthen her skills and developed a personalised road map to keep Maria on track to achieving her work goals,” explained Chardee.
Maria has secured work through an online platform WISE Hire, a new service that provides support workers to meet the needs of the community living with a disability. The flexible, easy-to-use platform enables support workers like Maria to help clients with walking dogs, do the shopping to attending a sports match. The platform also connects clients with support workers that can assist with daily hygiene routines and doctors’ appointments.
“My work with WISE Hire is a lot like nursing in terms of support work. You provide emotional support, listening to problems and concerns and drawing up a care plan.
Currently I am helping a lady with schizophrenia. I take her around her area, if she feels like a tea, we go to a café and talk. She loves cross-stitch and is teaching me now. Through WISE Hire, I am able to care for people that need it. I enjoy seeing how clients progress and supporting the community,” explained Maria.
For Maria, her dream is to be a palliative care nurse and ideally at The Wantirna Health palliative care inpatient unit. This path is one she believes will be extremely rewarding and Maria is up for the emotional challenge.
Maria will continue to serve the community and clients with a disability through WISE Hire, and with the support of Chardee and the GradWise program, continue to research and apply for the right nursing job.
“Knowing that I’m making a difference to someone’s life now and have the educational requirements to kick start my dream career in future is something to look forward to,” said Maria.
