New job brings financial stability and newfound confidence for Jason
When Jason knocked on the door of WISE Employment Mount Gambier, he had no idea that within weeks he’d be working in a job that saw him visit the office regularly. Following a period of unemployment due to ongoing health conditions, including two battles with cancer, Jason is now thriving in his role as a cleaner for Perfection Cleaners and in a funny twist of fate, the WISE office falls within his weekly cleaning rounds.
‘Every day I was out looking for work, but because of my age and because I hadn’t worked in years no one really wanted to know me,’ says Jason. ‘In the end I got a call form WISE and they’d found me a job! If it wasn’t for WISE I wouldn’t be working today, they put in 150 per cent and I couldn’t have asked for anything more.’
Since starting in the role Jason’s life has changed completely; he’s gained financial stability and is able to better support his three young children and partner, who has a spinal injury and is in and out of a wheelchair.
‘When I was unemployed I couldn’t afford gifts for the kids; this Christmas we spoilt them! I was able to buy my son a second-hand motorbike and PlayStation games. For the first time in years I was able to buy my kids presents,’ says Jason.
WISE Mount Gambier Employment Liaison Officer Belinda, who worked closely with Jason and assisted him to secure employment, says Jason’s commitment to finding employment was admirable.
‘As far as Jason goes his attitude is phenomenal. He went above and beyond himself; coming in and constantly maintaining contact with us. Anything we asked him to do to increase his chances of employment he would,’ said Belinda.
Jason’s employer Sharmane from Perfection Cleaners also has nothing but praise for Jason’s commitment to the job.
‘Jason is always there when we need him, he’s so keen. It’s not a case of him having to work it’s a case of him wanting to. Even though he has a distance to travel to get to work, he wants to be here and is always here when we need him,’ says Sharmane.
In between working and looking after the kids, Jason has also been teaching himself to read and write and is making outstanding progress on this front. He attributes these changes to finding meaningful work which has given him newfound confidence.
