Mikaela changes careers thanks to WISE and Jobs Victoria
After working nearly seven years in childcare, Mikaela was looking for a change in career and direction. But with experience only in this line of work, she was feeling apprehensive about applying for jobs outside the childcare industry.
“I was feeling quite lost and didn’t know where to start. Then I found out about the Jobs Victoria program with WISE Employment through a friend and thought it sounded ideal for my personal circumstance,” says Mikaela.
The initiative supports Victorians who face job challenges with personalised advice and referrals, work support and assistance in connecting job seekers with inclusive employers. To be eligible, job seekers need to have been unemployed for at least six months, or at risk of long-term unemployment due to a variety of barriers.
Upon approaching WISE, Mikaela was paired with Employment Consultant Kayla and they got to work.
“I knew Mikaela was feeling quite lost in what industry path to take, so I began by asking her a series of questions, to try and break things down and to get the most information out of her before narrowing down our options,” says Kayla.
Mikaela worked with Kayla to focus on what skills she had gained from child care and how they could be applicable to a wide range of industries, especially ones that are based on helping others around them.
Day-to-day, she manages administrative tasks for Royal Eagle, including answering phones, raising and invoicing jobs, liaising with clients and technicians that are on site, and talking to suppliers.
“I found the process really easy and stress-free. I knew Kayla had my back and I didn’t have to worry too much. I focused on honing in on my transferable skills and making sure my CV was up to scratch and Kayla dealt with the rest,” says Mikaela.
Mikaela’s time at WISE was short and sweet – landing a full-time role at Royal Eagle Security Services as a client service officer after only two months of starting the program.
“I really love working at Royal Eagle. Although it’s a stark contrast to childcare, it’s similar in the way that I’m finding it fulfilling to help others – instead now it’s clients, not kids!” says Mikaela.
As part of the Jobs Victoria program, ECs like Kayla check in with their customers every step of the employment process, even after landing their dream role.
“I’m still in touch with Mikaela every fortnight or so, just see how she’s settling into the new job. I’ll always have a soft spot for her as she was my first ever WISE customer, so we really went on this journey together” says Kayla.
