Cameron, living with ADHD and intellectual disability, expands his interests to land a new job in landscaping
Cameron approached WISE Employment Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast earlier this year after finding it difficult to secure employment.
Cameron, who lives with an intellectual disability and ADHD, first discovered WISE Employment with his mum on Facebook. They found themselves smiling at the success stories and thought that this could be a great opportunity for Cameron to find something that he would enjoy doing every day.
Initially interested in the retail sector, Cameron worked with his WISE Employer Liaison Officer, Aimee, to discover how his interests could fit with work opportunities, one being landscaping. Within just a week, Cameron had a job interview with Jim’s Mowing.
“I couldn’t believe how quick the process was. I was working with the team to develop my skills and prepare for interviews, and then all of sudden, I had an interview and was later offered a trial,” explained Cameron.
Cameron has now been working with Jim’s Mowing for three months and assists by trimming bushes, planting, shaping plants and organising the site.
“I love my job! The people are great and my manager, Lorenzo is teaching me a lot about landscaping. I really enjoy being out in the open and part of a team,” continued Cameron.
Lorenzo describes Cameron as a great employee, highlighting his attitude and punctuality as key attributes.
Lorenzo went on to highlight the need and benefits for employers to hire someone who faces some kind of challenge.
“Employers think that people with a disability won’t be able to perform the same tasks as other people, but that’s not the case. Cameron has proved that people with a disability can be just as good, if not better, than anyone else.”
Cameron continues to grow in his role, feeling more confident and independent and is saving up to buy his first car.
