Despite his fears of being judged, 34-year-old Casey Jones from Brisbane was ready to re-join the workforce after his time in prison. Casey had recently relocated to a new area and was determined to take control of his life and regain his financial independence when he sought the support of WISE Employment.
“Casey’s determination to obtain an ESAT (Employment Services Assessment) and DES (Disability Employment Services) eligibility on the first day we met was so strong, that he sat out the front of his local Services Australia for 5+ hours and returned to the office 15 minutes before close of business to be registered with us” said Casey Stone, Employment Consultant at WISE.
During his initial meeting with the WISE team, Casey identified clear employment goals of pursuing an automotive apprenticeship, and disclosed some personal challenges he was facing.
The team provided Casey with the support he needed to start his employment journey by guiding him through the process of creating a resume, a SEEK profile, and job searching once he felt he was ready. Understanding the importance of personal presentation, the team also provided Casey with tips on grooming and pre-interview clothing, in addition to necessary resources such as public transport Go Card top-ups and PPE.

To help boost Casey’s skills and employability, the team were able to enrol him in a pre-apprentice automotive course tailored for ex-offenders. Despite the 2-hour commute via public transport, Casey did not hesitate making the trip. He set such a positive example to his classmates, that the course trainer asked him to work on MTAQ (Motor Trades Association of Queensland) management tasks.
After completing the course earlier than its due date, Casey was connected with multiple employers, ultimately accepting an opportunity with Westpoint Autos Tyre & Mechanical. Despite the demanding two-hour commute each way, Casey was able to find fulfilment in his full-time work schedule.
Since accepting the job offer, Casey has continued to take steps towards his personal growth and stability. Casey secured a rental property and was able to move closer to work, purchased a motorcycle, completed a credit assessment, and sought budgeting advice regarding his pension changes. Casey has also made friends within his workplace and the local community.
WISE continues to support Casey with regular check-ins, and Casey mentions he has developed a genuine respect for the WISE team, seeing them as friends and allies, not just a service provider.
His In Work Support Consultant Kimberley states, “Casey is an asset to the team, always shows initiative and is willing to go above and beyond.”
In recognition of his skills and commitment, Casey has now been appointed in charge of the Warranty Room at Westpoint Autos, and is also completing his Nissan Master Tech Certificate to enhance his enterprise and professional growth further.
As Casey continues to progress in his journey, he has not only become more accepting of trials and tribulations, but acknowledges that they have shaped him into the person he is today. Casey’s next goal is to share his experiences through mentoring others with a similar background, using his resilience and determination to help shape the lives of others.
