When 51-year-old Kylie first approached WISE Employment she wasn’t completely sure what she was looking for, or if she was even ready to return to work. Living with anxiety and depression, Kylie hadn’t been in the workforce for over three decades.
She met with WISE Employment Consultant Abigail, and the two sat down to discuss her goals. Kylie struggled to hold conversations with people and was also suffering from chronic back pain, which meant her confidence had taken a hit.
“With every appointment, we were one step closer to building her confidence and getting her to be more open-minded,” explained Abigail.
Abigail organised for Kylie to do a computer course as she struggled with basic computer skills. After completing the two-day course, Kylie came back for her appointment at WISE much happier and proud of herself for getting it done.
Abigail saw a huge difference in Kylie’s demeanour and she also started to show initiative in her job search. Within the week, she interviewed with Fresh Leaf – Australia’s leading fresh herbs and leafy greens cultivators – and landed the job the same day.
“I thought it was time to get back out there. Abigail helped me in the job search and building my resume. I really don’t think I would’ve been able to do it on my own,” says Kylie.
Day to day, Kylie is in charge of picking and packing the produce and putting use-by dates on the herb sleeves and punnets. Soon enough, Kylie began working five days a week and saw a huge change in her disposition.
“I’ve made some good friends here, which always makes going to work more enjoyable. I’ve learned a lot and feel like I’m getting into a good rhythm,” says Kylie.

In-Work Support Consultant Kristen checks in with Kylie every fortnight and has made the visit to Fresh Leaf a couple of times. Kylie feels like she can go to her for anything, work-related or otherwise.
“She knows she can come to me anytime – sometimes all you need is to talk it out with someone who isn’t your friend or family member,” explains Kristen.
Kylie now has a new lease on life and is excited to get up every day and go to work. Having that purpose, and knowing she is more than just a great mum has dramatically changed her outlook, and forming meaningful friendships at work has been the added benefit.
Kylie says the routine regular work has given her, has been life-changing in many aspects.
“I’m walking again, my confidence has incredibly improved and I have financial freedom. Life is a lot easier for me, which I’m grateful for,” reflects Kylie.
