Tips for finding jobs for teens

If you’re a teen looking for work, we recommend incorporating the tips below in your job search process.

Add a cover letter

One of the first steps of your job search journey will be to create a resume, also known as a CV, that summarises your qualifications and skills relevant to the role you are applying for. If you have yet to gain any previous work experience, including awards, accomplishments, hobbies, and volunteer experience, it will help inform potential employers whether they think you’d be qualified or a good fit for the team.

When submitting your resume, it’s also good practice to craft a cover letter. A cover letter serves as a personal introduction that allows you to showcase your personality, enthusiasm, and other points you’d like to highlight that aren’t included in your resume, such as your interest or admiration in the company you’re applying for.

Clean up your social media profile

At times, your online presence can pose a barrier to securing a job. Employers and recruiters can often look up their candidates on social media to get an idea about the person behind the resume. Seek support and talk to your community

Seeking help during your job search exposes you to diverse perspectives from  potential mentors and experienced adults, and offers valuable emotional and moral support. Sometimes, it may even provide you with the tools and resources to secure that crucial first job as a teenager.

If you have been approved access through NDIS funding, the NDIS at WISE School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) program provides free, ongoing, tailored employment support for eligible young people aged between 15-24 years. SLES helps provide the job skills and confidence needed to find and maintain employment. Assistance includes tailored capacity building supports to increase your skills to help you find a job, navigate apprenticeships, and explore and apply for job vacancies.

Ongoing SLES support helps build confidence, develop social and communication skills, provide job skills training, enroll in study, access to counselling, resume writing, interview practice, and navigate public transport—all aspects that may ultimately help with the pursuit of jobs for fifteen year olds to twenty four year olds.

Follow up with prospective employers

After applying for a job or attending an interview, don’t hesitate to send a follow-up email or message. This is a courteous gesture that helps to demonstrate your enthusiasm and interest in the role, also showcasing your professionalism.

Final notes

If you’re a teen seeking employment, it’s important to remember that persistence and a positive attitude are key! Once you believe you’ve found the right job, it’s also important to ensure that you feel comfortable and safe. If you require any assistance during the process, we encourage you to seek help from a parent, guardian, or a trusted adult.
