How WISE helped support Emily to achieve her goals

When Emily first came to WISE, she was dealing with a number of personal and professional challenges. She was going through a tough breakup and was feeling unsure about her future after the loss of a job.

The moment I truly felt that was during one of my hardest times, when I was feeling completely alone,” says Emily.

“I couldn’t even talk properly because of my medical condition, but just being around the WISE team—even in silence—felt so warm and comforting. It gave me a sense of belonging that I hadn’t felt for a long time.”

Business Manager Christina and Job Coach Brittany worked with Emily to help her realise her employment goals, one of which was working with children.

They helped Emily to secure a traineeship to gain on-the-job training, part of which involved completing a first aid certificate.

“During one of the sessions, I had a non-epileptic seizure. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to finish because of the physical parts, like practising CPR on a dummy. But I was determined. I told my instructor, “I can finish it. I want to.” The WISE team believed in me, advocated for me, and I was given the chance to complete the course—and I did. That was a huge moment for me. It was my first big achievement with WISE and it made me so proud.”

Unfortunately, six months into her traineeship, Emily had another seizure and was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). A lengthy stay in hospital resulted in the loss of her traineeship – but WISE never gave up on Emily, and she never gave up on herself.

The WISE team helped set Emily up with programs like Dress to Success, assisted her with interview skills, helped her update her resume, and guided her on how to introduce herself to employers.

Christina and Brittany knew how important it was to Emily to stay fit and healthy, so they made sure to schedule all of her appointments around her Pilates classes, and encouraged Emily to move back home with her family when she mentioned she was considering it.

“This has resulted in Emily having an amazing support system and is helping her to maintain healthy living and eating habits,” says Christina.

Now, Emily has found a work-life balance with her role at The Lott, where she works for several hours every week.

“Now, I have a great routine, balancing work, fitness, and my wellbeing,” says Emily.

Christina said it has been incredible to watch Emily’s transformation.

“Watching Emily overcome her adversity has been rewarding; she has been the definition of the job reward for me. It’s why I do this job.”

“Seeing her thrive and come out of her shell has been wonderful to witness and be a part of,” Christina says.

While Emily has now secured work, she still feels supported by the WISE team, and knows they have her back whenever she needs it.

“What really makes a difference for me is how WISE creates such a safe and friendly space… they always accept me whenever I drop in—even when I don’t have an appointment. I feel so comfortable there. The energy in the office, the smiles on everyone’s faces, and the way I’m greeted by name every time makes me feel like I truly belong.

“I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I know I couldn’t have done it without WISE. They believed in me when I doubted myself and helped me find my strength. Today, I’m standing here as a stronger, more confident person because of their support.”
