Thinking about volunteering? It’s a practical way to build skills, meet new people and feel more connected. In this article, we’ll explore how it could support your goals, what you might learn along the way, and how WISE can help you get started in a way that works for you.
Volunteering can be your first step back into the community
You don’t need a paid job to build experience, confidence or community. Volunteering can help you feel more connected, grow your skills and discover new strengths—all while doing something meaningful.
For people living with disability or navigating long breaks from work, volunteering can also be a low-pressure way to re-engage with the community or explore different work environments with support.
What can you learn through volunteering?
Workplace skills
Volunteering can help you practise teamwork, communication, time management and problem-solving. These are skills that can support you in any workplace and may help you prepare for paid employment.
Personal growth
Helping others can support your wellbeing and build your confidence. Whether you’re assisting customers, creating something new or working behind the scenes, you’ll likely gain a sense of purpose and connect with likeminded people.
Exploring new interests
Not sure what kind of work or activities you enjoy? Volunteering can give you a taste of different roles and help you discover what feels right at your own pace.
Volunteering is valuable no matter your goals
Volunteering can be a stepping stone to employment or study. But even if that’s not your focus right now, it’s still a meaningful way to build confidence and feel connected.
It can also help you explore what matters to you and contribute to something bigger, with the right supports in place.
