47-year-old Lebanese migrant, Abed, moved to Australia to start a new life with his wife and children. But the journey to this new chapter wasn’t easy.
Abed had severe heart problems which required major surgery and, as a result, he still suffers from extreme exhaustion which restricts him from working full-time hours.
After being referred to WISE Employment from Centrelink, Abed met with Employment Consultant, Linda. Given English is his second language, Linda organised another EC, Baha, to join in on the sessions and provide Arabic translations.
“Abed has been through many serious triumphs and it was important for us to be able to communicate effectively to ensure we offered him the right kind of support and knew what goals he wanted to achieve,” said Baha.
Although Abed was initially unsure that a job provider would take him seriously, Baha fostered a calm, nurturing environment for him to thrive in, offering not just employment guidance but a genuine hand of friendship.
“In the beginning, Abed was refusing to go to work; he didn’t feel confident in himself or his ability to do the job,” said Baha.

“His situation was dire. His health was declining, he was living in a small room with his four children and his wife was in hospital back in Lebanon, unable to get back to Australia. It was a very challenging time for him. I really empathised with him and knew I needed to do everything in my power to get his life back on track.”
As weeks turned into months, Abed’s physical condition slowly improved, and he found himself on a brighter path where he could tackle his problems head-on. Baha became Abed’s mentor, offering valuable advice and encouragement. Abed’s resilience began to shine and within two months, he embarked on an entrepreneurial journey.
“I previously worked for Toyota as a mechanic, and Baha suggested I go back to work on my own terms by starting my own business. By this stage, Baha and I were very close. He supported me so much and really believed in me,” said Abed.
Abed’s journey was not without its challenges, but Baha was there for Abed every step of the way, extending his hand beyond the realm of employment assistance. When Abed needed a boost to start his business, Baha suggested he ask his brothers for help. After some convincing, they provided the necessary funds to purchase a small van – a crucial asset for Abed’s mobile mechanic venture. Baha even promised to be his first customer.
As Abed’s business took off, he discovered newfound freedom. He could manage his time and support his family, especially his wife who was facing health issues of her own. The flexibility allowed him to be there for his children, dropping them off and picking them up from school, and the opportunity to be present at family moments – big and small.
“Reflecting on my journey, I can only express gratitude for WISE and particularly for Baha who has been a beacon of hope. His unwavering support and belief in my potential has transformed me,” said Abed.
Abed’s life has blossomed, and he has forged a future where he can provide for his family and make a real difference to their lives.
Through Baha’s compassionate guidance and WISE’s comprehensive support, Abed’s life has undergone remarkable changes. He has transitioned from a place of despair to a position of pride.
“Baha’s kindness has proven to me that a little faith and support can truly change a life. I now know it’s okay to rely on someone for help and that doing so can make life a little bit better,” said Abed.
