Ariel’s come a long way since school, where he struggled to keep up in class and often felt like he didn’t fit in.
“I always struggle with learning and understanding things,” he says. “And I got bullied all the time… but now I just don’t care what people think.”
That shift in confidence came with time, and with the support of the team at WISE.
A foot in the door through IPP
Ariel connected with WISE through the Integrated Practical Placement (IPP) program, which helps young people with disability gain real-world job experience while studying. Through the program, he completed his Cert II and was placed at rebel, a perfect match for someone who lives and breathes sport.
Christina, Business Manager at WISE, says the program is all about bridging the gap between education and long-term employment.
“It’s designed to give kids who haven’t finished school, or are just finishing, a real shot at building confidence and getting into works,” she says.
A perfect fit at rebel
Simone, In Work Support Manager at WISE, has worked alongside Ariel from the very beginning.
“Ariel came through the IPP Program and did his placement while studying, rebel was his dream job. He’s passionate about sport and loves interacting with people. The job really suits him.”
Ariel started at rebel Southland, in Victoria, in 2022 and quickly became a familiar face to both customers and the team. He loved running the in-store basketball court and chatting with customers. When the court was closed, things changed, but the support didn’t stop.
Simone helped Ariel build confidence in other areas of the store, coaching him through new responsibilities both out the back and on the floor. Even when shifts dropped off, rebel made sure Ariel stayed connected, offering extra hours at their Chadstone store.
“They’ve been fantastic,” says Simone. “They’ve really made an effort to include him and keep him engaged.”
Christina agrees, adding that Ariel has a go-getter, can-do attitude that makes him stand out.
“He’ll question you and test you until he’s sure something’s right,” she says. “But once he’s confident and pointed in the right direction, he’ll give it everything he’s got.”
Just give it a go
Ariel’s message to others trying to find their way is simple. Don’t be negative. Just, give it a go.
“If the boss tells you to do something, just do it,” he says. “Life’s not always about you. Be productive. Be passionate.”
And if you’re struggling to get a job?
“You’ve got to make some effort. Don’t just sit there saying you can’t do it. If you believe in yourself, you can achieve anything. Everyone finds a job in their own way. Just don’t give up and make sure you reach out for help if you need it.”
